Writer-Director Thomas Javier Castillo is a filmmaker and Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film at Bowling Green State University. His films explore memory, history, geography and identity and are heavily informed by the "third space" of Mexican-American culture.
He has worked in narrative, documentary, and experimental modes, above all emphasizing the tensions between comedy and tragedy with a strong surrealist tendency. Specializing in cinematography, he also has experience in screenwriting, cinematic post-production, sound design, animation, and intermedia experiments. Additional research interests include the Western, low-budget cinema, Kung-fu films, and special cinematic effects. He received a BFA in Media Arts from the University of Arizona and an MFA in Radio/TV/Film (Directing) from Northwestern University.
